Intelligent Indifference

Location: Havana, Cuba - PRIX LUX 2016
In front of these barren shop windows, we glimpse the uncommon energy of a combative people made strong by a history and a situation that’s unique in the world.
The signs of economic disarray are clear at the very first glance. We sense the poverty and hardship. We imagine the remnants of a more prosperous past and draw a straight line to this unstable present. These businesses are struggling to survive. Bystanders seem not to notice the broken windows and bare market stands. No one is fooled.
The passersby may appear indifferent, but this only shows how keenly aware they are of what’s missing here, and how apprehensive they are about their uncertain future. Despite this, Havana is a livelier “ghost town” than ever before.
