On the street

Dans la rue is a Montreal-based nonprofit that has been supporting homeless youth since the 1980s; it began as an initiative by a priest, Father Emmett Johns, and a trailer.
Commissioned to create a stock of images reflecting the diversity of their services, I had to address a central ethical challenge: to tell a story without exposing individuals. The obligation to preserve people’s anonymity led me to invent a visual language based on suggestion rather than revelation, seeking emotion in a silhouette, a gesture, or a fragment of light rather than in faces. The result lies at the intersection of documentary reporting and institutional imagery, always in the service of a deeply human cause.
This project reminded me that every image must be conceived responsibly, as a space for representation as much as for protection.
